Medical literature supports patient hyperthermia, and "Safer Healthcare Now" suggests patients undergoing surgical procedures have a decreased risk of surgical site infections (SSI) if normothermia is maintained during the perioperative period. Patient recovery times are also decreased. Equally as important, hypothermia, is now highly recommended and used as a fist line treatment modality for heart attack and stroke patients to minimize brain damage due to oxygen deprivation!

Consequently, most patients who are not actively warmed will become hypothermic intra, and post operatively. Anaesthesia, anxiety, wet skin preps, and skin exposure in cold operating rooms can all contribute to Hypothermia.
